Title - Design and All That Jazz

Design is that area of human experience, knowledge and skill which is concerned with mankind’s ability to shape his environment to suit his material and spiritual requirements.

Designer is to meet specific promotional or commercial needs, by creating graphics too, such as packaging, products, displays, or logos. The designer may use a variety of mediums to achieve artistic effects when pitching his concepts.

Jazz improvisation is a musical form in which players work in and around a musical vocabulary to create new compositions of musical expressions.

This paper considers the potential for jazz improvisation to act as a metaphor for a new multi-disciplinary design paradigm and a vehicle for initiating a new form of design discourse.

Before considering the question are we certain we understand it? The paper considers the definition of jazz improvisation; including the relation with design. Following that is an evaluation of what design means, from a jazz improvisation perspective.

The role of the designer is then discussed and evaluated in terms of improvisation. The paper looks at whether designers have been affected by the ‘feel’ and technical expression of jazz improvisation. The paper concludes with an assessment of how jazz improvisation has influenced the design process.
